Abstract: Notopterusnotopterus is a freshwater air-breathing fish distributed in various habitats in the Indian subcontinent. The fish presents a number of adaptations to its air-breathing habit. The fish is capable of living on land. However, the fish is a facultative air-breather. Under bimodal conditions, it extracted 57.7% of its total oxygen, requirement from water and 42.3% from air for respiratory purposes. The air/aquatic ratio was 0.73
